This guest blog post is from forum user Niseema, who is a nail polish addict and also has a love for glitter. I hope you find her post useful – I know I did! – Sarah
I tend to get a little obsessed with things I love. Sweet Libertine. My nails. These two are huge. When I find a way to bring two of my obsessions together, it usually ends with me squeeing. While watching YouTube videos on how to do simple nail art, it suddenly hit me…
I can use Sweet Libertine glitter. On my nails. OHMYGOODNESS I AM A GENIUS! THIS IS THE BEST IDEA EVER! But…how?
I scoured the interwebs for tutorials and information to figure out how to get cosmetic-safe glitter onto my nails. I mucked up a couple of good manicures, tried different tools, and ultimately came up with a few ways that I think really work well with Sweet Libertine glitters. It’s a really fun way to express yourself and play with the glitters if you’re not used to working with them. You can get a variety of looks with the same jar of glitter by slightly altering your application technique. HAVE FUN!
For the purposes of this post, I am showing application of glitter onto already-painted nails. These techniques will work best if used with clear polish/top coat and not on your wet manicure color. Trust me; I jacked up a few manicures trying to take a shortcut.
What I used:

Sweet Libertine Cosmic Brownie
Sweet Libertine Champagne Supernova
Qtips, a nice hand full
An old eyeliner brush to brush excess glitter – if you don’t have one, use another Qtip or just wash it off later
A thin clear top coat (what most of us think of as clear nailpolish, like the kind you used to use to stop your pantyhose from running) I used Orly
Poshe top coat (you can use Seche Vite if you prefer, but beware of the dreaded polish shrinkage)
Quite a few sheets of paper towel
What I did:
I started with a fresh manicure – this is OPI You Don’t Know Jacques

Next, I dumped a little pile of Sweet Libertine Cosmic Brownie glitter onto the paper towel in front of me and made sure the Qtips were at the ready. I brushed the clear polish on one nail (only one nail!) and used a Qtip to lightly brush glitter on top.

This technique gives me medium glitter coverage. If I want a little less glitter, I let the clear polish sit for about 10-15 seconds before applying the glitter. This gives me light glitter coverage, every time.

It can get a little messy, but that’s why you have extra Qtips and the brush.
If you’re like me and love anything sparkly, you’re saying…GIMME MOAR GLITTER. If that’s you, then you’ll just have to dip right in that pile of Sweet Libertine glitter, sistah.

You’ll lift your finger from the little pile of glittery goodness and think…WHOA. But…it’s messy!

Brush over top with your brush or smooth it out with a Qtip. If you have an old empty clear polish brush, it will work great too.
After you are finished doing one nail at a time, apply your thick top coat gently. You don’t want the brush to touch the glitter – no need for it if you’re using a thick topcoat.

OHNOES! It got on my cuticles! Don’t panic! It will come off with regular nailpolish remover. Let it fully dry and clean up the edges.

Tips, from me to you:
Seriously, only do one nail at a time. I do my nails every day and I have tried to rush through two nails at once, only to fail.
Take the time to smooth out the glitter on each nail as you apply it. I thought I’d go back later and smooth it out, only to fail.
Dump the Sweet Libertine Glitter out onto a paper towel. You don’t want to put anything that’s touched nailpolish into the jar of glitter that will later be applied to your eyes. I thought I could apply glitter using a fresh Qtip for each nail, but I failed.
Experiment! Here are some ideas…
Try different polish colors with matching or contrasting Sweet Libertine glitters – someone please do a Skittles manicure with a bunch of different glitter colors!
Paint clear polish just on to the tips, dip into that glitter pile – this creates an awesome funky French manicure look that I LOVE.
Try striping that clear polish down the middle, or just on one or two nails.
Polka dots! Polka dots under sequins! Polka dots under fimo!
Add Sweet Libertine glitter to just one finger, if you’re not quite ready to take the full glittery plunge.
Add some of your favorite Sweet Libertine glitter to the last ½ inch of your favorite polish – clear or not!
Glitterama 2010 is the BEST time to stock up on the Sweet Libertine glitters so you can experiment!
