Sock Bun Curls – It Seriously Works

I’m a big fan of hotrollers. I use them for just about any event. But there are two downsides: I use a lot of mousse/hairspray and it also exposes my hair to a lot of heat. Afterwards my hair isn’t too happy, to the point that I call the holiday season my “hair torture season”.

I was browsing youtube and came across something called “sock bun curls”. At first I was skeptical, especially since I hate wearing something in my hair while I sleep. I’m afraid of looking stupid (although Justin has seen me do MANY stupid things in the name of beauty) and I don’t want something in my hair waking me up.

Last night, though, I decided to give it a try. I was exhausted – it was nearing 3am. I put my hair up in a ponytail, spritzed it with water, and after figuring out how to roll my layered hair into the sock I fell into bed.

I fully expected Justin to make fun of me. (That’s not a bad thing, we are both sarcastic smarasses, and anyone that has been to the Sweet Libertine offices knows exactly what I’m talking about). Instead he said “whoa, I thought it was going to look stupid but you have this Greco-Roman look going on. It looks neat.”

So, bonus points there. I didn’t look incredibly stupid. Score one for Sarah.

I woke up this morning and slowly took the sock out of my hair.

And holy crap, it works. It even looks better than the curlers because the curls are much more free-flowing and natural looking – they haven’t been glued in place with heat and product. Using a sock bun to curl your hair is possible!

It’s too bad that I don’t have anywhere to go because my hair looks awesome. I’m not a delicate or graceful person, so I am interested in seeing how long the curls last, but so far so good. I have my hair up in a loose clip while I do office work, and I’ll report back later on tonight with how they lasted. If I was going to an event I would use some light hairspray (I love Elnett), but for today I’m going 100% product free to see how they hold up.

So if you want easy curls give it a try – it’s simple to do, no heat, and only takes a few minutes!

Woah! That looks awesome. :D I’ve been tempted to try rag curls, but maybe I’ll try this instead. (Side-note: even though I have curly hair, it’s not uniformally curly, so I’ve been trying various ideas to get my curly hair to look good from all angles, not just from the front, lol.)
Just wondering… what does your hair look like when straight? Or should I say ‘natural’? :D

My hair is slightly wavy. Definitely not uniform, either, so I know how you feel!

  3. Mine is bone straight and my curling iron does nothing. I’m definitely going to try this.

My friend dose head band curls. The video that she follows is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYxS1ohz4Ao. I would do it too if my hair was long enough. It gives you 50’s style curls.
